Invitation to B-debate, Barcelona 8 March 2017

ODYCCEUS member Luc Steels has organised a debate on ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: DREAMS, RISKS AND REALITY.

Artificial Intelligence is in the news. Almost every day we hear about new applications, from self-driving cars to intelligent personal assistents, from customized medicine to automatic translation.

But as the technology percolates in society we are also beginning to see some worrying applications:

  • The use of political chatbots and targeted propaganda is polarizing society and impacting democratic elections. Is democracy in danger?
  • Many applications use deep learning which is unable to give any explanation how a decision has been reached. Can artificial intelligence be made accountable?
  • Self-driving cars or autonomous weapons act upon their own decisions, possibly with very bad consequences. Do we need to put limits on autonomous artificial intelligence systems? Who is responsible when something goes wrong?

This B-debate brings together top experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence (both researchers and entrepeneurs) to explain how some of the dreams found in science fiction have now become reality and why AI is currently taking off on a grand scale in almost all areas of human activity. The debate then zooms in on the main risks, particular for the future of democracy, bringing in experts in social science, communication science, and law.

The main outcome of the debate will be captured in a manifesto:
'The Barcelona Declaration for the Proper Development and Use of AI in Europe.'
